The seventh group of players named to the 46th annual Big 30 Charities Classic has been released. This year’s game is set for the night of Aug. 3 at Bradford’s Parkway Field.
The all-star football game, founded by Don Raabe, matches graduated senior stars from each side of the Big 30 border with New York leading the series, 22-21-2, though Pennsylvania has won three straight games, including last August’s 37-22 triumph.
Proceeds benefit area charities and, over the first 45 years, the game has donated nearly $1.7 million to area causes.
Added today to the New York squad are Allegany-Limestone’s Patrick Walsh, Pioneer’s Nickolas Rinker and Gowanda/Pine Valley’s Brady Andrews.
Pennsylvania’s additions are Smethport’s Bradley LaFleur, Coudersport’s Stephen Kelly and Cameron County’s Caleb Pifer.
Today’s six addees bring to 52 the number of players named to the game – 26 to each roster. Eventually, both squads will number 40-plus players.
LaFleur was a 6-foot, 240-pound offensive guard/defensive tackle, who was part of Smethport’s 11-1 turnaround season that ended in the District 9 Class A finals winning Adam Jack Big 30 Coach of the Year honors.
LaFleur won the Hubbers’ Down Lineman of the Year Award and will attend Clarion University and major in business management.
His favorite football memory was “our comeback win in 2018 over Coudersport, 21-20.”
Kelly was a 5-8, 180-pound running back/safety for a Falcons team that went 8-5, but won the District 9 Class A title and earned a berth in the PIAA championships.
He was Coudy’s Offensive Player of the Year and was a D-9 all-star.
Kelly, a Future Farmers of America Scholarship winner, will enter the workforce as a heavy equipment operator.
His most memorable moment playing football was “winning the District 9 championship.”
Pifer was a 5-10, 180-pound guard/linebacker who was tabbed Cameron County’s Most Improved Player as a senior and named team captain, a position he also held for the wrestling team for three years.
Upon graduation, Pifer will join the Navy.
Walsh, a 6-foot, 190-pound running back/linebacker earned Big 30 All-Star honors on defense, but is probably better known as a wrestler.
He has yet to choose a college.
Also a Big 30 wrestling all-star he finished fourth and fifth at consecutive New York state tournaments and was a two-time Section 6 class tourney champ and recorded second-, third- and sixth-place finishes at the sectional tournament.
Rinker, a 6-foot-4 quarterback/safety-cornerback, also made the Big 30 team on defense and was the Panthers Defensive MVP his last three seasons. He was also selected to the Big 30 Basketball All-Star team and was Pioneer’s hoops MVP.
The Panthers football squad went 6-3 and 10-1 his last two seasons and lost in the Section 6 Class B-1 championship game at New Era Field last November.
Rinker will play basketball at Bryant & Stratton and major in criminal justice with a goal of being a state trooper or working in law enforcement.
Of the Charities Classic, he said, “playing in the Big 30 Game will be the last time I’ll play football with my peers and I want to honor my coaches by putting on the pads one last time.”
His favorite football moment was” throwing a touchdown pass at New Era Field in our championship game against Cheektowaga and going undefeated in the regular season my senior year.”
Andrews, a 6-4, 350-pound center/defensive tackle, was a two-time Section 6 Class C all-star.
He will attend SUNY Cortland, major in coaching, and play football.
His most memorable moment playing football was “when I blocked my first pass and will never forget the reaction of my teammates.”
