ST. MARYS — It took four lead changes, 29 combined hits and finished with the bizarre quirk of having a starting pitcher record a save, but the Bradford Owls walked off the field victorious in a wild game over St. Marys Tuesday.
The Owls scored three runs in the top of the 12th inning to down the Dutch, 10-8, to sweep the season series against their Class AAAA rival.
“I told the guys after that they deserved that win,” Bradford head coach Andy Carlson said after his team snapped a four-game skid. “They have been grinding it out and playing well lately but we have just been on the wrong side of it.”
The Owls (4-7) scored their go-ahead runs on a strikeout in the dirt that was thrown away before Michael Gow tacked on an RBI single for good measure.
Bradford starter Tyler Gigliotti threw the first five innings of the game before being spelled by Gow, who threw nearly six innings in relief before being taken out for Gigliotti — who earned the save — by recording the final out in the 12th inning.
“That pretty much summed it up,” Carlson remarked.
The Owls found success up and down their order, with Gow, Caleb Nuzzo and Jason French each ripping three hits.
Bradford’s 10 runs in the game are its second most on the season.
“The guys took good approaches at the plate,” Carlson said. “Had hits up the middle from guys who have not contributed a lot. Basically a team effort and everybody in the lineup did something.”
French, Gow and Austen Davis each had two RBI for the Owls, which took a 7-4 lead in the top of the seventh only to have St. Marys score three in the bottom half to send the game onto extras.
There, Gow and Dutch pitcher Brandon Sicheri turned the game into a bit of a pitcher’s duel with each hurler trading scoreless innings up until 12th.
Jake Meeker had five of St. Marys’ 13 hits in the game, which also added a two-run homer from Sicheri in the seventh and a solo blast from Garret Bauer in the first.
