CLEARFIELD — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is alerting area drivers that work to replace a Route 59 box culvert near Smethport is scheduled to start Wednesday.
The box culvert spans Ice Pond Brook, about a mile west of Smethport on Route 59. Replacing this structure will remove it from McKean County’s list of structures in “poor” condition.
Traffic will be controlled through the work zone by temporary traffic signals enforcing an alternating traffic pattern. Replacement work will take place in a half-width configuration.
Overall project work will include excavation of the current box culvert, placement of a new box culvert, backfill, paving, and guide rail updates.
The existing box culvert is 15-feet long, was built in 1930, and carries more than 2,300 vehicles daily. PennDOT expects the new structure to be complete in early September.
L.C. Whitford Co. Inc. of Wellsville, New York is the contractor for this $931,000 job.
