Senior Steve Kellam recorded the seventh-best pole vault distance in Bradford track history with a leap of 13-9 to lead the Owls to a sweep of Kane (122-28) and Johnsonburg (110.5-39.5) in a tri-meet at Bradford High Tuesday.
“This was a nine-inch improvement over his best time,” Bradford coach Tom Tessena said. “This was really impressive due to the poor weather conditions. Steve also won the long jump with a distance of 19-9.”
Additionally, senior Mike Bosworth recorded a double quadruple with four first-place finishes against each team. He won the 400 (53.1), the 200 (23.8) and anchored both the 4×100 relay with Owen Kane, Donny Pattison, and Nike Erickson and the 4×400 relay with Tyler Kraft, Jerid Wilmoth, and Alex Liners (3:37.9).
Tyler Kraft had a double triple with three wins against Kane and Johnsonburg by winning both the 1600 (5:03) and the 800 (2:08.2).
“Tyler had a great day as well,” Tessena said. “The high winds were tough but then the temperature dropped significantly.”
Donny Pattison won the 100 and placed second to Bosworth in the 200 for another strong day. Dylan Phillips won the 110 high hurdles (16.3) and also placed third in the 300 (46.2). Alex Liners placed in the high hurdles (18.1) and the 300 (43.2 personal best) as well as running a strong leg in the 4×400 relay.
“Freshman Jerid Wilmoth ran well in the 4×800 and 4×400 relays for two double wins,” Tessena said. “He is becoming quite a competitor.”
Senior David Allen took second against both teams in the 800 (2:13.5) and ran his best time in the 400 (56.4). Gabe Mitchell and Ryan Cottillion finished one and two in the 3200 in addition to their legs in the 4×800 relay with Steve Morgan and Jerid Wilmoth.
Josh Mackey had personal bests in the shot put (40-2) and discus (111-7); Kevin Ackerman had his best throw in the shot (39-2.5); Nate Blauser had his best effort in the javelin(132-0) and also long jumped 19’0” as well as triple jumping 37-7.
Gavin McGee had a personal best in the high jump (5-5) and the long jump (17-6). Jake Pattison had his best time in the 400 (56.1) for two second places; Frank Colosimo had two second places in the pole Vault (10-0). Hunter Fox had his best mark in the 3200 (11:12). Junior Owen Kane ran well in the 4×100 relay and also placed in the 100M and 200M.
“Today was a good meet because we put together back to back performances from Saturday to today,” Tessena said. “We are starting to get in shape and really trying to be competitive all up and down the lineup. Our younger guys all got to get some meet experience and they took advantage of that. We need to get our top guy from last year Jaron Ambrose back and he is getting closer each day to doing just that. WE showed improvement in events that we needed to step up in and I think the guys surprised themselves today.”
Tuesday’s victories also marked the 400th in the long coaching career of Tessena.
“I wish to thank this year’s team as well as all other past teams for that 400th dual meet win. Special thanks to all the Bradford coaches this season Mark Kelley, Dave Cercone, Larry Stillman, Matt Teribery, and Natalie Marasco as well as all the coaches in past seasons. You guys made it all happen.”
Bradford travels to Brookville Saturday to meet up with Punxsutawney and Brookville for the first time this season.
