Imagine waking up the next day nine figures richer –– well, many locals have put their hopes, and money, into the Powerball lottery in an effort to make their dreams become a reality.
As of Wednesday, the Powerball jackpot was listed at $750 million, which would be the fourth largest jackpot in lottery history –– coming less than six months after the $1.6 billion Mega Millions and $687 million Powerball jackpots in October 2018.
Of the plethora of convenience stores spread throughout the area, Annie Gilbert –– who works at Kwik Fill on East Main Street –– said “everybody has been coming in.” She explained that since she started her shift, about two and a half hours before being interviewed, she had sold over 50 tickets. Gilbert said that she planned on playing, but didn’t hide the fact that the chance of winning was astronomical.
Victoria Kearns, at Crosby’s Mini Mart on Jackson Avenue, explained that the store had sold $779 in Powerball lottery tickets as of 6:30 p.m.
“I’ve at least had 50 people (buy tickets) just during my shift,” she said.
Kearns said the most tickets bought by one person was 30 tickets, while adding that she had purchased 20 tickets.
As of Wednesday, the $750 million jackpot was 10 times more than that of the Mega Millions.
