SMETHPORT — Acting McKean County treasurer Sherri Himes Swanson has announced her intention to seek the Republican nomination for the treasurer’s seat in the May primary election.
Swanson has been with the office for more than 6 years, and was appointed acting treasurer in November when former treasurer Mary Jo Sherwood resigned. Before that, she served as first deputy for five years and second deputy prior to that.
“As first deputy I worked closely and established a good rapport with the treasurer, controller, commissioners, financial director and chief clerk,” Swanson said. “I am involved in all of the functions of the treasurer’s office.
“As McKean County acting treasurer, I am currently responsible for overseeing all of the day-to-day operations of the office. I maintain daily cash journals, and record all revenues and expenditures for the county. I continue to manage more than fifty bank accounts, and am responsible for the accounting of over $4,500,000.00,” Swanson said.
She explained she has experienced each function in the treasurer’s office throughout her years there, and has been working to improve efficiencies in the office.
“Since being appointed acting McKean County treasurer, I have made improvements to the tax collection software and everyday duties up to date, including advanced bookkeeping and accounting,” Swanson explained. “I have new ideas and plans for further improvements in these areas that I am eager to implement as I continue to serve the people of McKean County.”
Swanson said she has completed numerous courses and participated in educational seminars related specifically to the functions of the treasurer’s office which include Munis, the primary accounting software used by the county, Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University and tax collector training.
She is also a certified notary public, making herself available to the public and other offices of the county.
“I believe my years of experience in the treasurer’s office and my training make me uniquely and exceptionally well qualified for the position of McKean County treasurer,” she stated.
A Hazel Hurst native, she is a 1999 graduate of Smethport Area High School. Along with her my civic duties,she enjoys camping, hiking, and spending time with her husband, Chris, and three children, Lily, Reiter, and River.
