WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., cosponsored legislation introduced by Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., ensuring newborn infants who survive an attempted abortion receive the same medical care that other newborn infants receive.
“It’s difficult to grasp that, in today’s society, we even need legislation protecting living infants. But some politicians have recently made this legislation more important than ever,” said Senator Toomey. “We have a moral duty to protect the most vulnerable among us, and infant survivors of abortion need advocates and defenders in Congress. I am honored to stand with the pro-life community to prevent the killing of an innocent child and I hope my colleagues in the Senate will act swiftly to approve this legislation.”
The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act requires health care practitioners to exercise the same degree of care for infants born alive after an attempted abortion that they would for any other child born alive at the same gestational age.
In 2013, former Philadelphia-area doctor Kermit Gosnell was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder after killing infants who were born alive after an attempted abortion. This case highlights the reality of these unthinkable situations, and demonstrates the need for this legislation.
