An emergency crew was called for a medical emergency Monday afternoon at American Refining Group Inc.
A contractor’s employee experienced a medical emergency about 1:15 p.m. Monday at ARG’s Foster Brook operations and was taken to Bradford Regional Medical Center for treatment, said Sara R. Furlong, ARG’s executive communications coordinator.
She said the ARG safety personnel and Emergency Response Team (ERT) were called to the site for a medical emergency and rope rescue.
While the initial emergency dispatch had indicated a possible hazmat situation, Furlong said no material or product was found to be involved.
“A contractor’s employee who was cleaning a railcar had just entered the car to begin work when he experienced a medical emergency,” Furlong explained.
The name of the contractor’s employee was not released.
She described the process of handling the emergency.
“Initial reports indicate the contracted employees were following all prescribed confined-space safety protocols at the time of the incident,” she said. “The confined-space attendant (often referred to as ‘hole watch’) immediately called for assistance from ARG’s ERT and Main Gate security.”
As per protocol, staff contacted the McKean County 9-1-1 Center, and a Bradford City Fire Department ambulance, Foster Township Police and several members of Derrick City Volunteer Fire Department responded in addition to the refinery’s ERT, according to Furlong.
“Responders rescued the individual from the railcar, and he was moved to a waiting ambulance where he regained consciousness,” she said. “He was alert and oriented before being transported to Bradford Regional Medical Center for further evaluation.”
The scene was clear by 1:42 p.m.
Furlong said the contractor contacted the man’s family.
“ARG will conduct a full investigation of the incident and will share any additional information as available,” she added.
She credited the Emergency Response Team with providing “another strong and successful response” to Monday’s emergency call.
