The Bradford girls basketball team had certainly hoped to keep their win streak going a little bit longer.
But with five seconds to go in a crucial D9 League game Monday night, it came to an end.
Elk County Catholic’s Julia Aikens hit a 3-pointer in the waning seconds to secure a 44-42 victory over Bradford to snap the Lady Owls’ four-game win streak.
Bradford (6-11,1-4) jumped out to a 15-8 early lead, but the two teams traded blows in a back-and-forth battle for the remainder of the game.
After taking a four-point lead into the fourth, the Owls went cold. Bradford didn’t make a single field goal and went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line before Aikens hit that three to put the Crusaders up two.
“We had some costly turnovers that hurt us,” Bradford coach Bob Hannon said. “It was just one of those back-and-forth games. We just didn’t do a good enough job at the end and it is a tough loss because of how well we’ve been playing.”
Taylor Newton poured in a game-high 27 points for the Lady Crusaders (9-9, 2-4).
“We had a tough time handling Newton,” Hannon said. “If she is not the best player in the District, she is certainly one of the best. We threw a couple different girls at her, but we didn’t do enough and she killed us.”
Erica Marshall sank four 3-pointers as part of her team-high 19 points for Bradford, while Hannah Lary made all 10 of her free-throw attempts to finish with 12 points.
Bradford will look to rebound quickly as it hosts DuBois this evening in another significant league game.

ST. MARYS — St. Marys scored the first 17 points of the game and held on for a lopsided victory over Port Allegany.
Kaylee Muccio (13 points), Allison Schlimm (12) and Megan Quesenberry (11) were all in double figures for St. Marys (13-3), which won for the 10th time in its last 11 games.
“They jumped out to a 17-0 lead and that is hard to come back from,” Port Allegany coach Jamie Evens said. “They are a quality team, have shooters everywhere, and move the ball well.”
Despite the loss, Cailey Barnett had a game-high 16 points for the Lady Gators, including her team’s only two 3-pointers of the game.
Port Allegany (13-5) will need to rebound quickly from the loss, as the Gators have a critical North Tier League matchup against Otto-Eldred Wednesday.
“We scheduled a game like this to prepare for the playoffs,” Evens said. “Hopefully we see some positives from this game on the back end.”

WELLSBORO — Sarah Chambers (14 points), Shaelyn Black (12) and Ros Page (12) helped Coudersport get back in the win column over Wellsboro.
The Lady Falcons (15-4) jumped out to a 26-10 halftime lead in their first game since having a 14-game win streak snapped Friday at Bradford.
“I just thought we played very, very good defense,” Coudersport coach Bob Tingley said. “I thought that led us to a good game tonight.”
Coudersport held the Lady Hornets to just six field goals in the game, and didn’t allow a single 3-pointer.
The Falcons also had their way offensively, as nine players find the score sheet.
Coudersport travels to Cameron County on Wednesday in a game that will essentially decide the girls North Tier League crown. The Falcons hold a one-game lead over the Lady Red Raiders.
