The Academy Awards Film Series is set for March 4 through May 20 at the Main Street Movie House. The theme is The Oscars 2019 and will include various films nominated for one or more Oscar categories.
March 4: Green Book
The movie synopsis starts, “Dr. Don Shirley is a world-class African American pianist, who is about to embark on a concert tour in the deep South in 1962.” The movie tells the story of that journey, as Shirley and the man he hires for security deal with segregation and racism. Green Book was nominated for Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role.
March 11: Roma
The story of domestic strife and social hierarchy in the 1970s, this story follows the young domestic worker for a family that lives in Roma, a middle-class neighborhood in Mexico City. Roma was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year, Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role and Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role.
March 18: First Reformed
A minister in Upstate New York deals with despair from tragedy, worldly concerns and a tormented past. First Reformed was nominated for Best Original Screenplay.
March 25: Vice
This story focuses on Dick Cheney and his work as VP to George W. Bush. Vice was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role and Best Motion Picture of the Year.
April 1: Bohemian Rhapsody
This movie is described as a “foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury.” The film gives the viewer a look at the band’s meteoric rise. Bohemian Rhapsody was nominated for Best Motion Picture of the Year and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.
April 8: If Beale Street Could Talk
This movie tells the story of a pair of lovers in 1970s Harlem. The two are set to marry when the man is arrested for a crime he didn’t commit, leaving his pregnant wife-to-be to fight for his release. The movie was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role.
April 15: The Favourite
The story focuses on Queen Anne in the 18th century, when her friend Lady Sarah governs the country for the frail queen. A new servant arrives and endears herself to Lady Sarah. Oscar nominations include Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, and two for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role.
April 22: Blakkklansman
An African American police officer infiltrates the local Ku Klux Klan branch as a Jewish surrogate becomes the leader. Oscar nominations include Best Motion Picture of the Year and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role.
April 29: A Star is Born
An aging musician who is seeing his career come to an end helps an aspiring singer get the fame she seeks. Oscar nominations include Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role.
May 6: The Wife
The wife of a Nobel Peace Prize winner questions her life choices and successes as they travel to Stockholm for his formal acceptance of the Literature prize. The film garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.
May 13: Can you ever forgive me?
An artist adjusts her methods when trends leave her behind. Oscar nominations were for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role.
