If you are sick, stay away from the hospital — unless you are seeking medical care, that is.
On Tuesday, Bradford Regional Medical Center and Olean (N.Y.) General Hospital announced it is restricting visitors to those 17 and older (except obstetrics/maternity) until further notice.
Officials noted it is a precaution against the spread of influenza.
“We only have a small number of actual (flu) results at the hospitals,” said Janene Dunn, a spokesperson for Upper Allegheny Health System. The restricted visitation is In order to protect patients, staff and other visitors from contracting the dangerous virus.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, between Sept. 30, 2018, and Jan. 26, which is the flu season so far, there were 41 cases of the flu reported in McKean County. The flu is considered widespread throughout the state, present in all of the 67 counties.
Cameron County has had 10 cases, Elk County, 87 and Potter County, 43.
Hospital officials noted, “Anyone with respiratory or flu-like symptoms arriving at the hospital, will be given a face mask to prevent further transmission of germs.”
Of course anyone seeking medical care is welcome.
“If people aren’t feeling well or suspect they have the flu, they should not visit the hospital, except to seek medical care,” officials noted. “Symptoms of influenza include cough, sore throat, fever, chills, congestion/runny nose, fatigue and body aches.”
Hospital officials offered a list of ways for people to help stop the spread of germs as well:
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Stay home when sick.
Cover the mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
Wash hands often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Practice other good health habits. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
