The scoreboard may tell one story, but the court would tell another as the Bradford Lady Owls fell to Brookville 57-47 in high school girls’ basketball action Friday.
A running score shows that Brookville put the first points on the board and maintained the lead to finish with the higher total, improving their record to 8-3. However, the drive and the determination showed by the Lady Owls from start to finish made the victory a hard-fought one for the Lady Raiders.
“Brookville has a nice team; They played well and shot well, and they beat us on the boards,” said Bradford coach Bob Hannon. “The girls played hard. There wasn’t any quit in them. Erica (Marshall) gives all she’s got; Hannah (Lary) hit some big shots for us and Morgan (Tyger) made some big shots. (Mackenzee) and Emily (Warner) came off the bench and gave us a boost when we needed it.”
Brookville put the first points on the board with a two-pointer from Marcy Shindler, but a foul immediately after allowed Bradford’s Kate Huber to cut that lead in half as she made her first free throw. The first quarter saw Brookville averaging four points to Bradford’s two, with a score of 14-7 as the clock wound down to zero.
By the half, Brookville had built up a 15-point lead and allowed Bradford to cut it back to 7, with a score of 31-24 on the board as both teams hit the locker rooms.
The third quarter saw Bradford with the first possession but Brookville adding to their lead with a four-point run. The Lady Owls answered with a three-pointer from Erica Marshall and a basket from Emily Warner to make the score 35-29 in favor of Brookville.
Brookville used back-to-back threes and two free throws for an eight-point run before Bradford’s Hannah Lary sank a basket to break their streak, making the score 43-31. Brookville sank one more free throw to bring the score to 44-31 at the end of the third quarter.
An intense fourth quarter saw both teams tally 13 points, including four foul shots for the Lady Owls and another three-pointer from Lary. Brookville recorded a three-point field goal and six free throws en route to their final score of 57. Bradford’s final score came from Huber with less than a minute to go in the game, making the final 57-47 in favor of the Lady Raiders.
“If you look at our record, it may seem like a disappointing year, but the girls are really making progress from last year. I’m proud of them for that. You can’t look at the record and see that,” Hannon noted.
The Lady Owls (1-9) have two tough away match-ups ahead of them, as they travel to DuBois Wednesday and Punxsutawney Friday.
