JAKE: We brought you a story Saturday on Jake Meister’s wrestling dream coming true, courtesy of Dillon Keane.
And thanks to a video of the wrestling match made by Brooke McGriff, the world is sharing in Jake’s accomplishment.
In case you missed it, Jake, 17, is a young man with cerebral palsy (non-verbal) and autism. The Bradford Owls wrestling team has embraced Jake. And last Thursday, Jake took on Dillon in a special match; Jake won.
Brooke posted the video and a story on Twitter; thousands of people have seen it.
Sports Center shared the video, which as of Monday afternoon had been viewed more than 3.1 million times. Thousands of comments lauded both young men for their sportsmanship.
Their story spread like wildfire. WIVB out of Buffalo, N.Y., ran a piece, as did Headline News on CNN, USA Today, Centre Daily Times — and a paper called The Weekly Times in Australia, the Spanish edition of the international paper The Epoch Times and who knows how many more places.
Jake’s mom, Mary Jo Corignani, said, “Wow. It’s been a whirlwind.
“Watching Jake on the mat was a dream for me as well. At the age of three, we were told that he’d never walk. To see him on the mat and to hear his name being cheered brought me to tears. Happy tears.”
Us, too, Mary Jo.
“That match was so much more than just watching a child who is differently abled. It was about a team — team filled with heart. I will be forever grateful for the way they’ve embraced my son. Disability has never defined Jake. And if anything, he’s proved different doesn’t mean less. I can only hope this inspires more children.”
She added, “I want people to see that there is still good in this world. Teach your children to be kind.”
The kids are all friends, and learn from each other. “These kids can teach us more than any textbook ever could,” she said.
Mary Jo said Jake and Dillon will wrestle again on Jan. 31. “I hope everyone comes out and supports Jake and his team!”
