The National Weather Service in State College confirmed that a tornado touched down in Tioga County during a severe thunderstorm July 22.
Meteorologist John Banghoff said the weather service received some reports of damage near Wellsboro and Liberty later that afternoon.
“We received some pictures of damage and sent out Tioga County Emergency Management personnel to investigate, but because of severe flooding issues we were unable to get out there the next day, as we normally do,” Banghoff said.
Once the system cleared the area, the weather service sent a meterologist to determine that it had been an EF 1 tornado.
The weather service looked at the severity of damage, direction that things fell and at the radar to determine a tornado had actually occurred, and not straight line wind damage.
As of Wednesday, July 25, Banghoff said Tioga County had received between three and seven inches of rainfall over the previous seven days.
A weather observer near Tioga recorded a total of 5.32 inches in four days.
