Bookworms in the Kane area will be seeing a new face at the Friends Memorial Public Library.
The library recently named Patty Kunicki as its director, succeeding previous director Cindy Parker. On Saturday, the library hosted a meet-and-greet in addition to an exhibit featuring setups courtesy of the Kane Summit Model Railroad Club.
“We had a fantastic turnout. It was a beautiful day outside. I think it was over 130 people that came through the door. Everybody was very optimistic, pleasant,” Kunicki said on Thursday. “We also have a tree for the SPCA, we got a lot of donations for them. The tree has animals that are available for adoption on it.”
Kunicki said she is looking forward to engaging with the community and making the library a place for the community to be productive and have fun.
“I am looking forward to bringing back book clubs for adults and teenagers, (and) continuing with our preschool and daycare centers to come up and join us for story time,” Kunicki said.
In addition to books, the library also has electronic resources available for use.
She said, “We also have laptops available for adults and students. I’m reaching out to the schools to make sure they are aware we have these laptops available for after-school programs and tutoring.”
For Kunicki, it was a combination of hometown pride and wanting to give back to the community that made her want to become the director.
“I was born and raised in Kane. I am the board president at the Kane Area Community Center. I have done a lot of volunteer and community work. I have always enjoyed reading,” said Kunicki.
She added, “I want to be able to be here and support the community and the children’s needs, the adults’ and young adults’ (needs).”
She explained that the library also has space for gatherings.
