SHEFFIELD — Port Allegany emerged victorious in a title game in which it never led by more than four points at the end of a quarter.
The Lady Gators held on and finished a 36-33 win over Mercer in the championship game of the Sheffield Tournament on Saturday.
“It was a battle,” Gators coach Jamie Evens said. “They were a really physical team. It was good for us at this point of the season to get that kind of test. We opened up a seven-point lead in the third quarter, and they closed it to one with about a minute left. We hit a couple of free throws. Overall, the line was key. We didn’t shoot well (7-of-17), but we shot better than them (5-of-18).”
Bree Garzel led Port (2-0) with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Cailey Barnett had 11 points and eight boards. Cierra Lannager notched six rebounds and Erin Stauffer three assists.
Darby Miller tallied 18 points for Mercer (1-1).

These girls have worked hard over the summer and the beginning of the year, and hopefully it’s starting to show.”
