RIDGWAY — The Elkers and Red Raiders were so hungry for the start of basketball season they decided to play six periods on Friday.
In one of the few District 9 matchups of the opening day, Ridgway edged Cameron County 54-52 in double overtime to take an early-season thriller.
The Elkers, D-9 Class A runner-ups last year, jumped out to a 17-7 in the first quarter, but the Red Raiders roared back to tie the game.
The teams traded buckets until Ridgway’s Zach Zameroski hit a big bucket in the second overtime to give the Elkers the lead for good.
“It was an exciting game,” Ridgway head coach Tony Allegretto said. “Zameroski made a big play down the stretch to put us ahead by two after we had been trailing for about a minute.”
Zameroski and Daunte Allegretto each had 16 points for Ridgway.
Cameron County, meanwhile, were lead by Jake Walters’ 16 points. Sophomore Caden Beldin added 15 of his own.
“It was the first game of the year, and mistakes were definitely made down the stretch,” Allegretto said. “But it was hard fought and we had a 10-point lead in the first half and they came back. Well coached team and a good game.”

Port Allegany 53, Sheffield 47, OT
SHEFFIELD — By their own head coach’s admission, the Port Allegany Gators didn’t play anything close to a great game of basketball on Friday afternoon.
But, after falling behind early, the Gators rallied against Sheffield and were able to force overtime en route to a six-point victory at the Sheffield Tip-Off Tournament.
“Just anything you can come up with saying that this was our first game of the season,” Port A head coach Jeff Stuckey said. “We struggled very much, but there were a few highlights here and there. Had some incontinuity but we came out with a win.”
Jordan Card led the Gators with 19 points, with Howie Stuckey and Dominic Guerrero chipped in 14 and 10 points, respectively. Anthony Edgell dominated the glass for Port A with 15 rebounds.
Sheffield’s Tyler Hepinger hit a game-tying three with 11 seconds to go in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime, but the Gators doubled up Sheffield in the extra period to come away with a season-opening win.
Hepinger had a game-high 22 points for the Wolverines.
Port A will face winner of North Clarion and Jamestown tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Canton 70, Austin 61
GALETON — Austin’s Dempsey Glover scored a game-high 24 points, but Canton’s depth was too much for the Panthers who came out on the short end of a 70-61 decision in the opening round of the boys’ Galeton Tournament on Friday.
Dempsey Glover scored 16 of his points in the second half, while J. Glover was also in double figures for the Panthers with 11 points.
Canton nullified D. Glover’s big night with 18 points from Michael Smittens, 17 from Zach Rentzol and seven other players who put points on the board.
Canton led 42-26 at halftime and then held on despite a 26-point fourth quarter rally by the Panthers, for the win.
Austin plays the loser of Friday’s Galeton and Williamson game in today’s consolation contest.

Ben Giardini added 10 points for the Gators, who had a 22-9 lead after one quarter and maintained an advantage from there.
“I thought our defense was outstanding in the second quarter, and really for the whole first half,” A-L coach Glenn Anderson said. “In the third, they got it going a little bit and got (the lead) down to nine. We struggled a little bit, but we were able to get it back to a comfortable lead.”
Connor Alfieri had 16 points while Caleb Lutz posted 14 for the Hubbers.
“We started off real slow,” said Smethport coach Jay Acker. “We performed much better in the second half.”
A-L will meet Buffalo Science in today’s championship game (3 p.m.) while Smethport will take on Fredonia in the consolation (noon).
