ALMANAC: There are so many things to be learned from the Farmers’ Almanac. Maybe that’s why it’s been around since 1818.
We received a copy of the 2019 Almanac, and found a wonderful item about the “Language of Flowers.”
We knew that a red rose means love, but that was about the extent of our knowledge. According to the almanac, baby’s breath means innocence. A calendula means jealousy. A carnation means divine love, fascination and distinction.
A pink carnation symbolizes a mother’s love, or “I’ll never forget you,” the almanac read.
A white carnation is innocence, faithfulness, pure love and good luck. A red carnation is, “my heart aches for you,” and admiration and fascination.
However, yellow and striped carnations aren’t as sweet. According to the almanac, a striped carnation is a refusal, or a message that “I can’t be with you.” A yellow carnation conveys disappointment with the other person.
Daffodils, the flowers of spring, can convey different meanings with the numbers of flowers given. A single daffodil signifies misfortune, while a bunch mean joy and happiness.
And roses, goodness, the almanac lists 13 colors, each with its own meaning.
A red rose, as we mentioned above, signifies love, as well as passion and perfection. Here are some colors and their meanings, as given by the almanac: burgundy represents beauty within; coral is for desire; dark crimson means mourning; lavender is love at first sight, enchantment; orange is deep enthusiasm, fascination; peach is desire, gratitude; pink is happiness, admiration, sympathy, friendship, gratitude; dark pink is thankfulness, while light pink is grace, joy, perfect happiness, gratitude, admiration and a plea to “please believe me.”
A white rose is a symbol of innocence, purity, secrecy and friendship. A yellow rose is joy and friendship, but also a decrease of love or jealousness.
Truthfully, we aren’t ones to read into the meanings behind flowers, we just like getting them.
They are bright, beautiful and bring with them joy and happiness, as well as the reminder that someone was thinking of us.
