A Bradford man is in McKean County Jail for allegedly hitting a police officer early Friday at his Elm Street residence.
Devin Ortz, 18, of 20 Elm St., is charged with aggravated assault, a first-degree felony; simple assault and resisting arrest, second-degree misdemeanors; harassment and consuming alcohol while underage, both summary offenses.
According to court records, at 4:48 a.m. Friday, Ortz called the McKean County 9-1-1 Center to report he was having a psychological emergency. Two Bradford City Police officers responded to the Elm Street home. Officer Kolin Strawcutter spoke to Ortz, who said he was depressed. While the officer was speaking to him, Ortz continued to talk on his cell phone. Strawcutter asked to him to pay attention and put the phone down, the records read.
Ortz “became very irate” and began yelling at the officers to get out of the house. Ortz began to get “verbally aggressive” and Strawcutter told him he would be detained for his own safety, the records allege.
The officers attempted to place Ortz in handcuffs, at which time he attempted to shove Strawcutter, but struck him in the chest and face. He continued to struggle with the officers while they attempted to detain him, and failed to cooperate, the records allege.
He was arrested and arraigned before on-call District Judge Bill Todd, and remanded to McKean County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in Central Court on Thursday.
