VETERANS DAY: This year, the 11th day of the 11th month falls on a Sunday, so Veterans Day will be celebrated Monday.
We wanted to get our “thanks” in before whichever day people choose to celebrate.
On Veterans Day, think about how one can show a veteran extra appreciation. Attend an event, ask a veteran about their service and really listen to the answer. Display the American flag to salute veterans.
Veterans Day celebrates the service of all military veterans.
Here are some numbers from history.com about the veteran population of the United States:
More than 16 million living veterans served during at least one war, while 5.2 million veterans served in peacetime.
Two million veterans are women. Seven million veterans served during the Vietnam War, and 5.5 million veterans served during the Persian Gulf War.
Of the 16 million Americans who served during World War II, about 558,000 are still alive.
Two million veterans served during the Korean War.
As of 2014, 2.9 million veterans received compensation for service-connected disabilities.
And as of 2014, three states have more than one million veterans among their population: California with 1.8 million, Florida with 1.6 million and Texas with 1.7 million.
The VA health care system had 54 hospitals in 1930. Since then, it expanded to include 171 medical centers; more than 350 outpatient, community and outreach clinics; 126 nursing home care units; and 35 live-in care facilities for injured or disabled veterans.
The website military.com has some suggestions: Treat them to a treat, like a lunch; recognize them within your workplace; share their story; serve the family of an active-duty military member through events, special gifts or recognition; and serve the community through a veterans service organization.
