At 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17, at the Harriett B. Wick Chapel at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford,
a free concert will be held featuring young performers from the famed Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester.
The group, known as the Amendous Quartet, is made up of undergraduate students from the Eastman School. The concert is being presented by the Marilyn Horne Museum and Exhibit Center.
The music selection, which will feature popular music for film, has been personally chosen by the group and will include arrangements of popular scores written for the “Star Wars” films and the HBO series “Games of Thrones.” Two arrangements of works by Japanese composer Koji Kondo will also be performed. These include music from the popular Nintendo game franchises “Super Mario Bros.” and “The Legend of Zelda.”
“I am so excited to have the Amendous Quartet performing for us. This is the first time we will present a group made up of four trombonists,” said Marilyn Horne Museum Manager, Matthew Hileman. “This is the first of three concerts the museum will be presenting this year in collaboration with the Eastman School of Music.”
Each of the quartet’s members has performed and competed nationally and internationally from the United States to China. Student groups from the Eastman School are rigorously trained and vetted before they are allowed to represent the school at professional venues.
The Amendous Quartet was chosen last spring to perform at the prestigious Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., an organization which awarded Marilyn Horne with its top honor in 1995.
The concert’s repertoire is an unusual one for the series, Hileman added. Works performed will include masters such as Bach, Debussy and Jobim, but the addition of familiar popular film and video game music is intended to draw younger audiences. “Classical performance doesn’t have to be boring. It’s important that we keep our programming fresh and interesting.”
Doors open at 7 p.m. and the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Seating is open and reservations are not required. More information is available online at marilynhorne.org.
