DUKE CENTER — It was the perfect example of a team effort Thursday night.
Eighth-seeded Otto-Eldred and ninth-seeded Cameron County battled for five games before the Lady Terrors came out on top 3-2 (20-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-14,15-12) in their District 9 Class A first-round volleyball playoff match.
The Lady Terrors, 14-7 overall, piled up some impressive individual stats in the match.
Leading the winners were Emmalee Sheeler with 20 assists, 8 service points and 1 ace; Reilly Raught with 14 kills and 2 blocks; Veronica Benini with 13 kills and 21 digs; Emilie Reitler with 15 assists, 12 service points, 2 aces and 10 digs; Harlee Vanscoter with 13 kills, 3 blocks, 12 digs and 16 serve receives), Haley Cousins with 16 digs and Jade Spinney with 14 digs and 16 serve receives.
The Lady Terrors trailed 2-1 after three games between the evenly matched teams, but closed out the match with wins in the final two sets.
“We looked a little rough, but this team has been resilient all season, so I’m not surprised that they came back and won,” said O-E coach Jame Thomas. “I’m very proud of the girls.”
Cameron County’s leaders were Kaelee Bresslin with 4 aces, 7 kills and 7 digs; Mallory McKimm with 5 aces, 7 kills and 3 digs; Morgan Lorenzo with 1 ace, 3 kills and 10 digs, and Alyvia McKimm with 2 aces, 11 assists and 4 digs.
Otto-Eldred returns to action next Tuesday at Ridgway against the top-seeded Lady Elkers.
Johnsonburg 3, Port Allegany 0
PORT ALLEGANY — Visiting Johnsonburg played well above its No. 13 seed on Thursday, the Lady Rams posting a three-game (25-16, 25-17, 26-24) sweep of fourth-seeded Port Allegany in their District 9 Class A first-round volleyball playoff match.
“Johnsonburg is a good team, especially for their seed,” said Port Allegany coach Pam Terrette.
Leading the Lady Gators were Jenna Sprankle with 16 assists and 12 digs; Erin Stauffer with 7 kills and 8 digs; Kierra Keck with 6 kills and Kalyn Naylor with 5 kills.
Terrette was pleased with the season despite the loss.
“Regardless of how the season ended, I’m proud of our girls and the season that they had,” Terrette emphasized.
Johnsonburg advances in the playoffs to take on the winner of the DuBois Central Catholic vs. Cranberry match next Tuesday.
Coudersport 3, Union 0
COUDERSPORT — Shaelyn Black recorded 10 kills and three aces to lead Coudersport to a three-set sweep of Union in their District 9 Class A first-round volleyball playoff match Thursday night.
The 6th seeded Lady Falcons took control right from the start winning 25-17, 25-17 and 25-16.
“The girls played well,” said Coudersport coach Brian Green. “We were fairly consistent and didn’t shoot ourselves in the foot. When don’t hurt ourselves, we play pretty well.”
Backing Black were Mikayla Kavounas (9 assists, 4 kills, 4 aces); Erica Williams (2 kills, 2 blocks) and Addie Myers (3 blocks, 2 kills).
Leading 11th seeded Union were Marli Morgan with 14 assists and Emma Kiera with 6 kills.
Coudersport, 14-5 overall, will travel to 3rd seeded A-C Valley on Tuesday.
