SCARY: With Halloween fast approaching, we’re ready to settle down with a scary movie.
We’ve seen lots of lists of the top horror movies of all time. Few feature the same flicks.
Here are the top 10 from the film critic website Rotten Tomatoes.
10. The Night of the Hunter, 1955 — “Featuring Robert Mitchum’s formidable performance as a child-hunting preacher, (the film) is a disturbing look at good and evil.”
9. Alien, 1979 — “A modern classic, Alien blends science fiction, horror and bleak poetry into a seamless whole.”
8. The Bride of Frankenstein, 1935 — “An eccentric, campy, technically impressive and frightening picture, James Whale’s Bride of Frankenstein has aged remarkably well.”
7. Repulsion, 1965 — “Roman Polanski’s first English film follows a schizophrenic woman’s descent into madness, and makes the audience feel as claustrophobic as the character.”
6. Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horror, 1922 — “One of the silent era’s most influential masterpieces, Nosferatu’s eerie gothic feel — and a chilling performance from Max Schreck as the vampire — set the template for the horror films that followed.”
5. King Kong, 1933 — “King Kong explores the soul of a monster, making audiences scream and cry throughout the film, in large part due to Kong’s breakthrough special effects.”
4. Psycho, 1960 — “Infamous for its shower scene, but immortal for its contribution to the horror genre.”
3. A Quiet Place, 2018 — “A Quiet Place artfully plays on elemental fears with a ruthlessly intelligent creature feature that’s as original as it is scary.”
2. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, 1920 — “Arguably the first true horror film, (it) set a brilliantly high bar for the genre, and remains terrifying nearly a century after it first stalked the screen.”
1. Get Out, 2017 — “Funny, scary and thought-provoking, Get Out seamlessly weaves its trenchant social critiques into a brilliantly effective and entertaining horror/comedy thrill ride.”
We are surprised at some of the choices, and some that didn’t make the list. For us, The Exorcist needs to be on any list of the top horror movies. It was number 88 on the list of 150.
