SMETHPORT — Nathan Hollowell and Blake Kinner each reached the century mark in rushing yards and scored a touchdown to key unbeaten Smethport’s Senior Night celebration with a 37-0 shutout of Keystone in their District 9 Small School Division football game Friday.
Hollowell carried carried the all 11 times for 120 yards and reached the end zone from 46 yards out in the first quarter to start the scoring. Kinner, meanwhile, tucked the ball under his arm nine times for an even 100 yards and put his 6-pointer on the board in the second period after scampering 61 yards.
“We’ve been getting contributions from both Nathan and Blake all year,” said Smethport coach Adam Jack. “The guys up front under coach Yingling have done a good job blocking for them.”
Offense wasn’t the only key to the Hubbers 8th win of the season. The defense held Keystone to a minus three rushing yards and only 152 yards of total offense.
“Keystone was threatening in the third, but Sanderson come up with interception and then Trevor Zuver intercepted a pass in the end zone to preserve shutout,” Jack pointed out. “Coaches Berlin and Howes did a good job calling the defense.”
Smethport’s other scores came on a 20-yard pass to Sanderson from Grant Ognen in the first quarter, an 11-yard run by Greg Johnson in the second quarter and a 36-yard pass from Noah Lent to Braedon Johnson in the fourth period.
Noah Costa converted all four of his PAT kick attempts and Kylar Carpenter gave him a break by splitting the uprights for the final point of the night.
The Hubbers as a team were also credited with a safety in the final quarter.
“We had a good week of practice. The kids all maintained their focus and it carried over especially in the first half,” Jack noted. “It was Senior Night and all of them got some playing time in the game. This has been a special group of kids.”
Smethport (8-0) travels to Coudersport next Friday, while Keystone (3-5) hosts Elk County Catholic.
