KANE — A Smethport man died in an early morning accident on Sunday in Lafayette Township.
Michael Zaehringer, 35, of Smethport, was pronounced dead at the scene by McKean County Coroner Michael Cahill, Kane-based state police reported.
According to police, at 4:58 a.m. Sunday on Route 59, just west of the intersection with Airport Road, a vehicle driven by Zaehringer was traveling west on Route 59 at a high rate of speed, when it crossed into the eastbound lane and struck a sign belonging to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation that was on the south side of the roade.
After hitting the sign, the vehicle, traveled 109 feet, struck a culvert and came to rest. Zaehringer was not wearing his seatbelt, police said.
