Despite the clammy weather, locals had the opportunity to “pig out” on Thursday at the Bradford Township Lions Club during the United Way’s 20th annual pig roast and clam bake.
Puns aside, the annual event plays a key role in the United Way’s campaigns, with this year’s effort themed “Be the Change.” The goal of the campaign is to raise $340,000.
Executive Director Mandi Wilton Davis said that the event is the celebratory kick-off to each year’s campaign.
“Not only are we celebrating this year’s campaign, we’re also celebrating 20 years of a successful event,” Davis said. “Everything is homemade, everything is done by volunteers. People have been here since 7:15 this morning cooking and prepping.”
Davis added that today is her last day of being the United Way’s executive director. Kelly Case will be the interim director until a full-time replacement is chosen
“We have good food, good drinks and it’s always a good time,” said Jodie Wagner, a member of the board. “Unfortunately, Mandi is leaving us as the executive director as of (today) after our pig roast. Thankfully she stayed during that time.”
The event included live music from Jim Copeland, Tyler Calkins and Mick Marshall; 50/50 raffle tickets with prizes, including a $500 Visa gift card; a $100 Visa gift card; Pittsburgh Penguins tickets; and Bradford Area Chamber of Commerce gift certificates.
“We wish (Mandi) all the best on her new adventure at St. Bonaventure (University),” Wagner said.
