SNOW: That tag line is sure to get attention in September.
Snow is not in the immediate forecast, but we read an article about it that we want to share with our readers.
PennLive had a neat story recently about the snowiest places in Pennsylvania. Bradford made the list, but interestingly, it was fifth with an average snowfall per year of 75 inches. That average is based on 30 years of data compiled by the National Weather Service, PennLive reported.
In first place is Corry with 113 inches, followed by Somerset with 110, Erie with 101 and Johnstown with 88 inches.
After Bradford on the list is Mount Pocono with 70 inches, which is tied with Warren.
Scranton was well behind the leaders, but still came in with 45 inches to tie with State College.
Pittsburgh had an average of 42 inches. Harrisburg and Lehigh Valley averaged 28 inches each.
Lancaster had 20 inches and Philadelphia had 18 inches.
Higher snowfall amounts are attributed to lake effect snow, and to elevation.
In comparison, Buffalo, N.Y., gets an average of 94 inches.
According to USA Today, the snowiest place in the continental U.S. is Blue Canyon, Calif, with an average of 240.3 inches. Including Alaska in the list means the snowiest place is Valdez, with an average of 326 inches a year — or just over 27 feet. Yikes.
The website weather.com reports that Mount Baker Lodge in the Washington Cascades is the record holder for the most snow in one season. The lodge, at an elevation of 5,000 feet, measured 1,140 inches — 95 feet — of snow in the 1998-99 season.
MORE: While we’re on the topic of weather, we looked up some more data about Bradford.
