Bradford defeated the Kane Wolves by a score of 21-45 and the St. Marys Dutch 15-45 on a very hot day in their home opener on Tuesday. Kane gained a split by defeating the Dutch 21-37.
Tyler Kraft again was the top Owl taking second place in 18:50 against Kane and first against St. Marys. John Wolfe of Kane took home top honors in 18:30.
“That was a good time on an 88 degree day,” BHS coach Tom Tessena said, adding, “Senior Hunter Fox continues to make a name for himself by moving up to be the second man (third overall in 19:46) for the Owls.
“Sophomore Ryan Cottillion, who was our number four runner on Saturday, moved up to number three today by running 20:07 (fourth overall). Sophomore Gabe Mitchell was fifth overall in 20:14.”
Kane’s Jordan Wolfe broke Bradford’s string of four straight runners taking sixth overall in 20:26.
Sophomore Quentin Minard was Bradford’s fifth man at 20:38 (seventh overall). Kane’s Tyler Bernecky was eighth (20:41) and St. Marys’ Taylor Belsole was ninth (20:43). Sophomore Ian Paterniti made a big move u[ to 10th place (20:52) and the number six position for Bradford. Sophomore Devin Benson maintained the number seven spot by taking 11th place in 20:52. After a Kane runner, Hayden Barr, was 12th in 21:06, Bradford took the next three spots with sophomores Aiden Wright (21:08) and Stephen Morgan (21:29) and senior David Allen (21:31). Senior Ethan Hollamby placed 17th in 21:48 while Frank Colosimo took 23rd in 25:07.
“This was definitely a tough day to run and our course is a lot harder than the one at Lock Haven,” Tessena said. “I thought we would be 35 to 45 seconds slower than Saturday but the extreme heat added at least another 45 to 60 seconds to our times. Plus it’s hard to run two races within two days of each other this early in the season.
“I especially liked the way Hunter Fox, Ryan Cottillion, and Quentin Minard responded. They all improved their position on the team. I think all the guys were tired from Saturday. I am anxious to see how we do this coming Saturday at Bemus Point. With so many younger and inexperienced guys it’s normal to see some differences from week to week. I think we are going in the right direction.
“One thing I hope we learned today was that you can use the weather as an excuse because the other teams our running in the same weather.”
In the Middle school action 7th grader Leo Paterniti continued his winning ways taking home first place honors with a time of 11:07 on the 1.65 mile course. Leo followed up his outstanding day on Saturday with another great run.
However St. Marys defeated the Owls 25-36. St. Marys runners Jack Beyer (11:30), Auggie Secco (11:38), and Wyatt Foxter (12:02) took second, third, and fourth, respectively. Bradford’s Evan Elmore was fifth in 12:26. Kane’s John Bell was seventh 12:41.
