Late Sunday, McKean County District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer confirmed that the gun used by Chad Setzer to fire at police Aug. 27 was indeed the handgun stolen from Wright’s Realty/Notary earlier that day.
“The investigation into the officer-involved shooting on Route 155 near Port Allegany on Aug. 27 continues,” Shaffer said in a press release.
Chad Setzer, 42, of 6147 Route 155, Port Allegany, was killed by a single gunshot to the head, fired by a member of the Kane-based state police, according to details released by law enforcement to date.
Shaffer explained in the most recent release that Setzer had been a suspect in a burglary at Wright’s, where cash and a pistol were stolen. “The burglary is believed to have occurred between midnight and 7:51 a.m. on Aug. 27,” she said.
Shaffer said more details will be released as the investigation continues. She has estimated that it could take weeks to complete the investigation.
Court records state five troopers and a Port Allegany Borough Police officer were at the home to serve an arrest warrant on Setzer, and the police established a perimeter around the house. When Setzer came outside, he fired “more than one shot at the officers present,” Shaffer said previously.
Law enforcement has yet to identify who the trooper was who shot Setzer.
The district attorney’s office will investigate to determine if the shooting was justified, according to a spokesman for the state police.
According to state police protocol, the trooper who fired the fatal shot will be put on administrative duty until the investigation is concluded. A simultaneous investigation is conducted by the state police internal affairs division.
