SMETHPORT — The former Eldred Borough secretary charged with stealing thousands from the municipality waived her preliminary hearing in the case Thursday in McKean County Central Court.
Robin C. Mazurkiewicz, 54, of 1879 Prentisvale Road, allegedly took cash paid by residents for utility bills between Jan. 1, 2014, and March 31, court records indicate.
According to the criminal complaint, on March 6, the Eldred Borough secretary/treasurer noticed that a cash payment she took the day before from a customer had been deleted from QuickBooks; she later noticed a cash payment she took on March 21 was deleted as well.
Kane-based state police were tasked with investigating suspicions that Mazurkiewicz was issuing receipts for utility bill payments made in cash and failing to deposit the money into the bank, court records stated.
After she discovered the deleted transactions, the secretary/treasurer examined QuickBooks and found deleted sewer and garbage transactions with 17 customers that totaled $4,984, the criminal complaint indicated.
On Aug. 8, police interviewed Mazurkiewicz and asked if she was taking money. She admitted that she was, but said she thought it was around $5,000, according to court records.
However, a forensic accountant determined that between Jan. 1, 2014, and March 31 she took at least $25,400, the criminal complaint stated.
Mazurkiewicz remains free on $50,000 unsecured bail. She is represented by Bradford attorney Casey Graffius.
