SMETHPORT — A day-long workshop for anyone who maintains unpaved roads is scheduled for next month in Smethport.
The course will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 13 at St. Elizabeth Church in Smethport. There is no cost to attend.
The event is sponsored by the McKean County Conservation District, in cooperation with the Pennsylvania State Conservation Commission, Penn State Center for Dirt and Gravel Road Studies, and Penn State Extension.
The course will present innovative and effective practices to reduce maintenance costs and sediment pollution from unpaved roads. Focus topics will include a presentation on many ESM Best Management Practices, and Invasive Plant Control/Identification. Other topics will include roadside vegetation management, roadside banks, road & stream interfaces, ditch outlets, driving surface aggregate, road surface maintenance and drainage, and additional maintenance techniques. These practices protect streams from erosion and sedimentation that originate from unpaved roads. Course includes an afternoon field session.
