The Allegheny National Forest has temporarily closed the Kinzua Beach swim area due to E. coli in the water, although visitors may still use the picnic area.
E. coli is a bacterium that comes from human or animal wastes (such as Canada geese), forest officials said. It also frequently occurs after periods of heavy rain when swimming areas are more likely to be flooded by runoff.
The swim water at the beach is tested weekly during the summer by a certified lab. Kinzua Beach will reopen when the test results are within normal limits.
