SCHOOLS: It’s time for the school year to start once again.
The first students are heading back on Wednesday, and that includes students in Smethport, Port Allegany, Kane and Otto-Eldred districts in McKean County; all students in Cameron County School District; and students in Coudersport, Northern Potter and Austin districts in Potter County, too.
Galeton and Oswayo Valley start back on Thursday, as do school districts in Elk County: Johnsonburg, Ridgway and St. Marys.
Bradford Area School District is the last in the county to start, with the first day scheduled for Aug. 27.
Some tips from the internet, submitted by teachers, for the first day:
Be on time. The first day can be confusing or overwhelming, so make sure a child will have enough time to find their classroom.
Take a few moments with your child before sending them off. An extra hug or a pep talk can help boost a child’s confidence.
Make sure everyone eats breakfast. A full stomach can help a child stay focused.
Double check backpacks. Make sure everything the child needs is there at hand.
Turn in all forms on time. Emergency contacts, healthcare slips, physicals — it may seem like a pain to fill them out, but they are necessary to help a school community run efficiently.
Don’t overwhelm the teacher. The start of the school year may not be the best time to bombard the teacher with concerns and questions. Introduce yourself, and get an email address to follow up with questions and concerns.
Leave. If you take your child to school, say goodbye and let them join the class. Hanging out in the classroom to watch makes it hard for the child to focus.
Take some time for yourself. After the children leave, enjoy a cup of coffee and some peace and quiet.
