COUDERSPORT — The Bradford High boys golf team kicked off its 2018 season at the Coudersport Invitational at Coudersport Country Club on Thursday.
The Owls finished tied for fourth as a team with a final score of 263. Elk County Catholic won the overall title with a score of 253. Wellsboro also shot 253 but the Crusaders won on a tiebreak.
Smethport came in third with a score of 260.
ECC’s Brady Schneider posted the individual low score of 77.
Leading the way for the Owls was Spencer Cornelius, who finished tenth overall with an 85.
Bradford head coach Travis Faulkner was left impressed by the freshman’s performance in his varsity debut.
“This was his first match as a high schooler and he came out and shot an 85, which is a great score,” Faulkner said of Cornelius. “He started off a little slow, but he birdied the last hole and had seven pars on the day. He really worked the course and spent a lot of time looking at it. Considering he’s never played this course before, he took his time thinking his shots and making good swings.”
Not far behind was Joey Frigo, who finished tied for eleventh with a score of 86.
“He finished with five pars and did a really good job,” Faulkner said of Frigo. “He had one or two bad holes, otherwise he would’ve been in the low 80s.”
Also competing for Bradford were Joe Gorse (92), Thomas Anderson (97), Max Greenberg (104), and A.J. Gorse (112). Joe Gorse and Greenberg both notched a birdie apiece.
Faulkner said there is understandably room for improvement after the opening round of the season.
“None of the guys were 100 percent happy with their scores,” Faulkner said. “They know they can do better.”
Bradford’s next event will be the St. Marys Invitational at Bavarian Hills on Monday.
