DRAGONFLIES: Betty Grasser of Wilcox said she saw something new on Aug. 9 on her enclosed porch: a swarm of dragonflies.
“They were flying everywhere — I don’t know how they did not hit each other. I have never seen so ‘many’ in a group.
“Did anyone else experience this?”
We’ve never seen anything that, either, but we bet that must have been incredible. Readers?
FLOODING: We have some storms in the forecast this week in our area, but for some spots in the state, they’ve experienced some pretty wild flooding this summer.
If you have any flooding issues, rain related or otherwise, the American Lung Association shared some tips recently to protect your lung health.
• “Protect your family from the start.”
The association recommends that people cleaning up any water messes where N95 masks, disposable gloves and goggles. Limit exposure of the clean-up process to children, older adults and family members with chronic lung diseases.
• “Start by stopping the water intrusions.”
Find all the water damaged materials and be aware that they may contain toxins or mold.
• “Turn off the electricity and gas at the main location during clean-up.”
Also, don’t use any gasoline, propane or charcoal-burning equipment for the clean-up process, as they produce carbon monoxide.
• “Clean what you can, and discard the rest.”
Clean items that can be cleaned with water and detergent, then dry them thoroughly. Anything that could harbor mold or toxins should be tossed.
Watch out for new breathing problems such as coughing, wheezing or feeling short of breath, chest tightness. Get emergency help if someone’s fingernails or lips turn blue or if they have severe chest pain.
