HARRISBURG — Officials with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will join forces with law enforcement nationwide for the 2018 Labor Day “Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over” high-visibility enforcement campaign.
The campaign runs from Friday through Sept. 3 and coincides with the Labor Day holiday weekend, which is a deadly time of year in terms of drunk-driving fatalities, officials said.
In fact, during the 2016 Labor Day holiday, 36 percent of fatalities in traffic crashes involved a drunk driver. During that same year, there were 10,497 people killed in drunk-driving crashes, nearly one-third of all vehicle crash fatalities.
Individuals who need a safe ride home from this year’s Labor Day holiday celebrations are advised to plan ahead by downloading the NHTSA’s SaferRide mobile app, available on Google Play for Android devices and Apple iTunes Store for IOS devices. SaferRide allows users to call a taxi or predetermined friend, and identifies the user’s location allowing the individual’s location for pick-up.
Officials said that on average, a DUI can cost $10,000 in attorney fees, fines, court costs, lost time at work, higher insurance rates, car towing and repairs, and more.
