OPERATORS: We’ve heard from a couple more people who have memories of the elevator operators who used to be found in some of the buildings in town.
One person told us, “I started work at Prudential in the Hooker Fulton Building in 1956. Mr. Jack Camas was always there to greet us as we entered the elevator. He would ask how we were and when we asked him he would always reply ‘finer than frog hair.’
“Amazing the things you remember!”
Another person had a father-in-law — Grover — who ran the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford elevator when the university was using the Emery Hotel as a dormitory.
The elevator “always used to always break down on him,” our caller remembers, saying he would constantly complain about it.
BASEBALL: A little while ago, we heard about a local woman — Margie Holland — who played on an all-American team in the 1950s.
We were able to track down this article from the Aug. 13, 1957, edition of The Era, on her participation:
“A girls baseball team, one of the top ranking clubs in the country, will make its appearance in Kane on Wednesday and playing with the club will be Margie Holland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Holland of Kane and a niece of Edward Holland of Bradford.
“Miss Holland, who was born in Kane and was graduated from Kane High school this past June has been playing baseball since she was four years old when she started out playing catch with her dad. Her interest in the sport never faded.
“A year ago she was a member of the boys knothole team in Kane. Her ability was spotted by a scout who notified officials of the All American Girls team and she was immediately signed for the summer. She reported to the club in Philadelphia three days after her graduation and has been with the team since.
“Her tour has taken her through Virginia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Missouri, Wisconsin, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Her participation in the game here Wednesday will be her final one.
“In September, Marg will report to West Chester, Pa. where she will be enrolled as a student West Chester State Teachers College.
“The game in Kane is being sponsored by the Kane Knights of Columbus with all profits being turned over to the Kane War Memorial fund. Philip Jacobus, who has been named chairman of the affair, stated that the All American Girls will play the Ludlow Wildcats.
“Cooperating with the game will be members of the War Memorial Committee and the American Legion.”
