OLEAN, N.Y. — The Allegheny Highlands Council, Boy Scouts of America, will kick off its Scouting promotion for the season on Saturday.
Scouts from across the nation have long promoted Scouting through its Show and Sell Popcorn Sales, but this is the first time Show and Sell is being introduced in Western New York’s Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties and in Pennsylvania’s McKean and Potter counties.
Three units — Portville Cub Scout Pack 631, Allegany Cub Scout Pack 677, and Mount Jewett Boy Scout Troop 410 — will kick start the AHC Western Gate District inaugural “Show and Sell” on Saturday, with dozens of local units participating in the coming weeks.
Cub Scout Pack 631 will show and sell at Crystal’s Confections/The Scoop, 176 S. Main St., Portville from noon to 3 p.m.; Cub Scout Pack 677 will show and sell at the Olean Wal-Mart, 1869 Plaza Dr., from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Boy Scout Troop 410 will show and sell at The Annual Swedish Festival in Mount Jewett, all day Saturday and Sunday during the festival.
“Show and Sell is an opportunity for Scouts to tell their Scouting story, and in the process, obtain community support for the work they are doing in areas like citizenship, character development and leadership,” said Michael Kelley, an AHC board member and the Council’s Popcorn Kernel. “Scouting is a vibrant program for youth and offers outdoor experiences like no other.”
In addition to learning about the Scouting program, community members who opt to support Scouting will receive one of six different popcorn products, from Unbelievable Butter or Kettle Corn Microwave to Caramel Corn, with or without nuts, and a Cheese Popcorn option, Kelley said. Youth applications to join Scouting will be available at most Show and Sell locations, as well.
