COUDERSPORT — Potter County will hold a public meeting on Aug. 30 to gather public input for its countywide hazard mitigation action plan.
The meeting will be from 2 to 3 p.m. at the County Emergency Operations Center, located at 20 Mockingbird Lane, Coudersport. The public is invited to attend.
The purpose of the meeting is to provide updates to the current plan and to solicit information from citizens. Public input will help the project team to identify and analyze potential natural hazards affecting residents and recommend possible actions to reduce their impact. Hazards will include floods, tornadoes, severe winter storms and landslides.
For anyone who cannot attend the meeting, information about the planning process can be obtained by contacting Potter County Emergency Management Coordinator Glenn Dunn at 274-8900 ext. 501 or papadunnema@gmail.com
The goal of the hazard mitigation plan is to minimize or eliminate the long-term risk to human life and property from known hazards by identifying and implementing cost-effective mitigation actions. Mitigation is defined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency as sustained actions taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from hazards and their effects.
Federal regulators require counties to develop an updated, approvable hazard mitigation plan every five years. The plan will not only enable Potter County to be better prepared in the event of a disaster but will also permit the county to retain eligibility to apply for federal grant and disaster funding.
