SMETHPORT — The McKean County Fair Ag Day on Saturday is a lead-in to the 113th annual fair, which opens Aug. 13, and continues through Aug. 18.
This event that reminds us of our agricultural heritage that led to county fairs in the 1800s, starts at the Isadore farm in Smethport from 9-11 a.m. with registration of tractors for the annual parade. “All tractors must be suitable for road travel,” said Bill Kohler, a fair director and coordinator of the event since it began more than ten years ago.
Owners of all brands, models and colors are invited to participate, Kohler added.
There is no registration fee. However, parade participants are encouraged to donate a non-perishable food item or personal care product, such as deodorant, shampoo or toothpaste, which will be donated to the county’s food pantries in Bradford, Smethport, Kane and Port Allegany.
At noon, the events move to the infield for the tractor games. Drivers will test their skills in a variety of events, such as Teeter Totter, Slow Tractor Race, Pile the Chain, Back the Wagon and Roll the Barrel as they compete for prizes.
A tractor show and demonstrations are also scheduled.
Non-perishable food items will be collected from noon to 3 p.m. “‘Ag Day’ gives us the opportunity to collect items for the food pantries and have some fun and a good time, too,” Kohler noted.
