A Bradford man will face two preliminary hearings on Aug. 15 for accusations including theft and burglary.
Daniel R. Vargas, 45, of 108½ State St., is charged in one case with burglary, a first-degree felony; criminal trespass breaking into a structure, a second-degree felony; criminal trespass entering a structure, theft and receiving stolen property, third-degree felonies.
According to a criminal complaint in the case, on June 16, Vargas entered someone’s home by temporarily disengaging the lock on the door. Once inside the home, he allegedly removed a safe that he knew contained between $4,000 and $5,000. The victim in the case had surveillance footage that showed it was Vargas who had broken in and taken the safe, the complaint alleged.
In the second case, Vargas is charged with selling four guns that didn’t belong to him to a firearms dealer for cash. The guns had been stolen from a Bradford residence, according to the criminal complaint.
He is charged with four counts of theft, all second-degree felonies.
A hearing for the burglary case is scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 15 before District Judge Dom Cercone, and a hearing for the theft cases is scheduled for 1 p.m. before District Judge Rich Luther.
Vargas is jailed on a total of $100,000 bail. He is represented by the McKean County Public Defender’s office.
Hearing set in case with alleged death threat
A preliminary hearing on charges of threats and assault has been scheduled for later this month for Bradford man Howard Strait.
Strait, 41, is charged with terroristic threats, a first-degree misdemeanor; simple assault, a second-degree misdemeanor; and harassment, a summary offense.
A criminal complaint in the case alleged that on May 11, Strait and another person were involved in an argument when Strait grabbed a bread knife and “came at” the other man. The second man grabbed the knife and the two struggled, giving the man some cuts and a puncture wound. When the knife broke, Strait threatened to kill the other man, the complaint read.
Strait remains free on $10,000 unsecured bail. The hearing in the case will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 15 before District Judge Rich Luther. Strait is represented by attorney Christopher Martini.
