DUKE CENTER — Two dozen chairs were set up in anticipation of a healthy turnout for the meeting of Otto Township residents at the fire hall Thursday to discuss the plight of the township’s cemeteries.
When that many more had to be retrieved, it was evident that the residents realized that now was the time for action. Kristi Snowbaxter chaired the meeting and welcomed everyone, extending thanks to those who have been maintaining the cemeteries — Cody Stone and Gary Silvis, presently, Robert Gallantine, recently, and the Barton family, who maintained the Rixford grounds for literally generations. A third cemetery, quite small but not any less important, is currently being maintained by an unknown party.
Initially discussed was present (and past) ownership of both cemeteries. Attorney Kyle Milliron stated that he had researched court records and was unable to bring to light any definitive answers. He did, however, verify that the township could be gifted the properties and therefore obligated to assume the responsibilities. It was decided to not pursue that course of action and proceed as a community endeavor. Questions were raised and opinions were voiced on the issue of the legality of moving forward without this matter being settled. It was suggested that state Rep. Marty Causer, R-Turtlepoint, or the state attorney general’s office be contacted to aid the “which” (and “who”) hunt.
Funeral director Denny Frame, who maintained Eldred’s Oak Hill Cemetery for thirty-plus years, explained the problems he encountered and the solutions, recommending that the group proceed without waiting for finality of legal ownership or responsibility, which may never be determined. Gallantine, former caretaker of the Duke Center cemetery, divulged the history of his employment and turned over a copious amount — four large boxes — of records from the past, which will be appraised at a later date.
A motion was made and seconded that an association be formed to oversee and be responsible for the maintenance and finances of all three cemeteries in the township. The vote was unanimous to proceed and officers were nominated and elected. Presiding over the newly-formed association will be Sharon Schwab, with Kelly Pearce as vice-president. Patty Barton and Jim Miller fill the offices of treasurer and secretary, respectively.
The officers will meet on Aug. 23, at which time they will announce the next public meeting.
