Remember thumb wars as a kid? Well this “war” is between green thumbs.
On July 29 from 1 to 5 p.m., there will be a tour of nine prestigious local gardens. Following the Bradford Garden Tour, there will be more celebrating from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Garden Gala at Graham’s Greenhouse where tourists may vote on their favorite garden while enjoying wine, beer, and hor d’oeuvres. Awards will be given out at the Gala.
Main Street Manager Chelsea Schwab said that the tour had been on hiatus.
“It was something that had been suggested to us to bring that back, and we’re going to have nine finalists gardens on the tours. Each of these gardens stands out so it’s going to be a great experience,” said Schwab.
She said there will be different genres and categories for gardens. One example of a category is technology and how it is incorporated into gardening.
One of the locations on the garden tour is Chapel Ridge. That facility’s activity coordinator Lisa Geitner said some volunteers from Bradford High School came and planted flowers.
“Jan Russell and her group (of students) volunteered to come and plant some flowers, and they did a really nice job; the flowers look great,” said Geitner.
Geitner added that residents at Chapel Ridge added pieces of art throughout the garden.
“It’s amazing what our residents have made. Some of them hardly ever even talk, but give them a paint brush and they can make some really beautiful things,” Geitner said.
Tickets for the Gala are $10 and Gala-Tour combo tickets are $15 with proceeds benefiting the improvement and landscaping of green and public spaces in Bradford. Those who register will receive a wristband and a map with locations of the gardens.
