If you’re looking for a summertime meal of hot-dogs cooked on the grill and homemade potato and macaroni salad, consider visiting the Greater Bradford Senior Activity Center’s all-you-can-eat picnic from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
The cost is $6 per person and includes a variety of salads, baked beans, chips, dessert and drinks. The event, as well as other Saturday lunches at the Senior Center at 60 Campus Drive, provides money for the overhead of the facility and other assorted needs, said Carol Steck, director of the facility.
“We try to get our fundraisers in through the summer because the United Way campaign” isn’t operating at that time, Steck said in reference to the fact the Senior Center receives United Way funding.
“We have (lunches) once a month because we have a window” or timeframe the fundraisers can be held, she explained. “We need it for the overhead, to pay the bills … we usually have a pretty good turnout.”
She said the lunches and other fundraisers are coordinated by Nancy Reynolds, president of the Senior Center’s board.
Amy Patterson, secretary and bookkeeper at the facility, also helps with the events and said the picnic theme is usually held once a summer.
She said members of the Senior Center, as usual, will donate the dishes of food, dessert and manpower to run the event.
“We can get one more fundraiser in August … we usually make between $400 and $500 and it helps,” Patterson said. “We found that when we do the all-you-can-eat (meals) we get more people.”
Another feature of the picnic will be a used-clothing sale that will have a number of larger size clothing articles for $1 or $2 an item.
Liz Lindemuth, who is organizing the sale, said the majority of the clothing is made in large and extra large sizes.
“We had a lot of men’s clothing that was donated to us,” Lindemuth noted. “Usually we don’t have men’s clothing, but we got a lot of it in” as well as large and extra large women’s clothing.
She said the clothes will be available in a room off the larger community room at the Senior Center.
