Forgery charges against Smethport man were bound to McKean County Court Monday at a preliminary hearing before District Judge William Todd.
Daniel L. Jones, 26, of Smethport, is charged with receiving stolen property and forgery, both third-degree felonies, and criminal mischief, a second-degree misdemeanor.
According to court records, Karl Lightner last saw his dirt bike — a black and yellow 2008 Suzuki RMZ 250 — on Feb. 6 in Norwich Township. He went away to West Virginia, and when he returned on Feb. 24, he saw his dirt bike was missing.
Lightner went to Tieler Raymo’s house because he heard the bike was there, and Raymo told him that Jones brought the bike there. Lightner took back the bike, which was damaged and the plastic guards had been removed, court records stated.
Lightner told police the bike was worth about $2,500 when it was stolen, and about $1,000 in damage was done to it by the time he got it back.
Lightner confronted Jones, who told him he bought the bike from someone else; Jones offered Lightner $300 not to get the police involved, court records stated. According to court records, police talked to the person Jones claimed he bought the bike from; the man said he did not sell a bike to Jones, did not create or sign a bill of sale and did not know know Jones said he did.
Jones is free, having posted $25,000 bail.
