GOLD STAR:Former Vietnam era Army pilot Dr. Dennis Faucher said he is still looking for Gold Star families to honor at this year’s Willow Creek Triathlon on Aug. 4.
Dennis explained, “Gold Star Families are the parents, siblings, children and spouse of military personnel killed in combat.
“This can be from any of our armed conflicts,” he said. “I specifically am looking from McKean County for immediate family of Pfc. Ronald Herbstritt, Lance Cpl. Michael R. Cuneen, Sgt. James V. Ralston. Also for relatives of Richard J. Berrettini who served in the Gulf War.
“It was a great event last year and memorabilia for others to see would be appreciated. Other Gold Star members not mentioned are also welcome to call my office at 814-362-1575.”
EXPEDITION: Here’s an unusual event for an unusual day: On Friday the 13th, a bigfoot expert will lead visitors on a bigfoot hunt in Cook Forest State Park in Jefferson County, the Pennsylvania Great Outdoors Visitors Bureau announced.
The event is being hosted in honor of the inaugural campout and conference of the Pennsylvania Bigfoot Project this weekend.
The conference itself is a private event, but the public is invited to the bigfoot hunt, hosted by the park.
There will be a meet-and-greet with bigfoot expert Amy Bue from 7 to 8 p.m., followed by a talk from 8 to 9 p.m. and a 9 p.m. guided bigfoot expedition through the park. The group will meet at MacBeth’s Cabins, 15361 Route 36, Cooksburg.
Participants are asked to bring chairs and a headlamp or flashlight. You don’t need a reservation to attend, but the event will be limited to 150 people.
Friday is also the start of the Red, White and Blueberry Festival in Reynoldsville, also in Jefferson County.
According to the Pennsylvania Great Outdoors Visitors Bureau, the three-day event boasts a bake-off, pie-eating contest, and blueberry treats such as muffins and wine. Other activities include live music, crafts and vendors, a chalk art contest, a children’s bike parade, hockey, a book sale, car races, roller skating and swimming.
