Major upgrades at a four-way intersection in Foster Township are a step closer to becoming reality after the Foster Township Supervisors Monday approved advertising for sealed bids.
Supervisor Chairman George Hocker said the project has many facets to it, including a traffic-light pole being put into the flowerbed near Tim Hortons/Crosby’s, and handicap ramps will be placed at each intersection–– East Main Street, Bolivar Drive and Derrick Road.
Officials plan on opening bids in August, Hocker said. The state received $62,500 under the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s “Green Light-Go” program in 2017, and Hocker said that the work has to be completed by June 2019.
In other business, township resident Tom Perry expressed concern about the safety of local police officers on the heels of officer-related fatal shootings around the country, including New York state.
He said he often sees several police officers from Foster Township, Bradford and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford continue hang out in groups at a local establishment.
“The cars are like a red flag,” Perry said, indicating the officers would be a target for someone wanting to commit a crime against police.
He continued, saying that “I don’t think they should be held up in a bunch like that, do you?” –– addressing Foster Township Police Chief Tom Munn.
Munn countered, saying that the gathering of officiers isn’t a common occurrence.
Perry said he sees otherwise. “It only takes one (person to commit a heinous act),” he said.
“See what you can do, and thank you,” Perry said.
Also at the meeting, supervisors:
• approved having police help with traffic control at the Derrick City Volunteer Fire Department’s third Feel the Burn 5K Run/Walk slated on Aug. 11;
• approved advertising the sale of a 2004 truck for the road department; and
• heard from Munn, who reported for June that the police dealt with 274 complaints, 12 motor vehicle accidents and 27 citations, and nine criminal investigations were conducted.
The supervisors will meet in a work session July 19 starting at 6:30 p.m. and the next regularly scheduled meeting is Aug. 6 meeting beginning at 7 p.m., both at the municipal building at 1185 East Main St.
