LOBO WOLF: If you’re in the Kane area, stop in the McCleery Discovery Center and see its newest edition: “Tanya,” the only full mount lobo wolf in the world.
The finished mount was unveiled Saturday.
“This is a significant addition to the center, since the last time anyone would have seen a full lobo wolf was 1972 before Jack Lynch moved the pack to the state of Washington,” said Dick Bly, executive director of the McCleery Discovery Center. “I have seen the process over the past nine months, and I can assure you the finished mount will be most impressive to see.”
According to Bly, “Tanya” was born in the 1970s and formerly lived in Kane.
Several people have worked on the project since it began last fall, including taxidermists Jerry Reddinger of Mayport, Ashley Barrett of Chambersburg, Keith Flicker of Mertztown, Matt Zimmerman of Denver, Pa., Dee Carley of Kane, Dan Swanson of Ludlow, Bob Evans of Harrisburg, Jason Krause of Pine Grove, Chad Housworth of Upper Black Eddy, Jason Confer of Aaronsburg and Clark Green of Ludlow.
Tina Swanson and Margaret Mohney provided professional grooming of the mount.
ZUCCHINI:After reading a recent article about zucchini, Bob Rusiewski shared his thoughts on last year’s zucchini-growing season.
“In 2017 I planted a packet of Hybrid Jackpot seeds and raised 50 zucchini, and believe it or not, I had none go to waste as friends were actually asking me for them.
“The key is to pick them before they and their seeds get too big,” Bob explained, joking, “Usually I would throw some excess zucchini in an open car window hoping the owner would enjoy, but not last year. I was told some people had poor luck with growing them last year, unless of course friends wanted me to do all the work for them.
“I made a deal with my friend Barry that I would give him fresh zucchini if he would make me some zucchini bread in return. What a great tradeoff as by September he had perfected a great recipe! We both won!”
