Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services Inc. (ADAS) will be hosting the Road to Recovery Community event from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the Grace Lutheran Community Life Center.
The event will feature a presentation from Michael DeLeon, founder of Steered Straight Inc.
Through Steered Straight, a nonprofit organization formed in 2000, Deleon has reached more than five million students and thousands of adults in recovery facilities.
“Michael’s story resonates because his life was once entwined in drugs,” officials said. “He converted his personal road to recovery into a trail, blazed with the pertinent resources his audience needs to live better directed and more purposeful lives.”
Deleon is an award-winning filmmaker and has directed and produced four documentaries on addiction, focusing on the opiate and heroin epidemic in America, marijuana legalization and Addiction Recovery.
Addiction drug overdoses now outnumber death by car accident, according to ADAS. Also, one in four teens today say they have misused or abused a prescription drug.
Recovery begins once drug use ends and although early stages of recovery are different than long term recovery, the process begins once the poison leaves the body.
The investment the addict makes in their recovery is the most important investment they could possibly make. The return on this investment is actually their life.
