RED HOUSE, N.Y. — Swimming and other water activities are expected to resume soon at Red House Lake in Allegany State Park.
Park officials last week hoped the lake could open this weekend, but it looks like that has been put off until July 7.
Delays in the $6.5 million Red House Lake Dam/Bridge project held up the opening of Red House Lake because the water level needed to be held at 8 feet while concrete repair and sealing work was completed on the dam and spillway.
In a statement, state park officials said, “All critical concrete work on the Red House dam spillway area has been completed to date so the lake level can be returned to normal elevation once final certifications are completed and adequate rainfall is received.”
Tentative plans called for reopening Red House Lake beach on Saturday “or a date soon after when the lake has returned to an acceptable level.” The beach would be open daily through the peak summer season. That date has now been pushed back to July 7.
Heavy rains on Monday helped bring up the level of the lake by several feet.
Quaker Lake beach has been open weekends since Memorial Day Weekend. It will be open daily beginning Saturday.
Work by crews from Union Concrete and Construction, West Seneca, continued work Tuesday on approaches to the Red House Lake bridge. Paving of ASP Route 1 from ASP Route 2 across the earthen portion of the dam and the dam/bridge will occur once soil moisture tolerances are met in the coming weeks, park officials said.
Once work is completed on the earthen portion of the dam the roadway and lakeside trail construction work can be finalized. Rip-rap has been placed on the lakeside portion of the earthen dam.
Park officials emphasized the remaining earthen dam and roadway portion of the construction work will not affect recreation on the lake.
J-Con Parks will offer water rentals at Red House as well as Quaker. They rent row boats, canoes, kayaks, paddle boats and paddle boards as well as bicycles.
